Laser Safety Course Overview
The Laser Safety Training course introduces the fundamentals of lasers in healthcare settings and then builds toward practical risk recognition and protection strategies.
Learners start with laser basics—what lasers are, how they function, and how they’re used in different clinical disciplines. The course then covers laser classifications and the specific hazards associated with various types and powers of lasers. From there, learners review warning signs and limits, and conclude with safe work practices and PPE required to work safely around laser equipment.
By the end of the course, employees understand both the technology and the safeguards that keep laser procedures safe.
Laser Safety Course Content
Lesson 1: Introduction and Objectives
Scope of laser use in healthcare, importance of laser safety training, course objectives, and overview of laser hazards and protection strategies
Lesson 2: Laser Basics
What lasers are, laser components, wavelengths and their significance, laser types in healthcare, applications in surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry, and how lasers differ from ordinary light
Lesson 3: Laser Hazards
Eye hazards, skin hazards, fire and explosion risks, plume and airborne contaminants from tissue vaporization, electrical hazards from high-voltage power supplies, and chemical hazards from dyes and coolants
Lesson 4: Limits and Warning Signs
Laser classification system and hazard levels, maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits, controlled access areas and nominal hazard zones, warning signs and labels, door interlocks and warning lights, and regulatory requirements
Lesson 5: Safe Work Practices and PPE
Engineering controls, administrative controls, laser safety eyewear selection based on optical density and wavelength, skin protection, fire prevention, and emergency procedures for laser accidents
